A buffer differs from a nail file mainly in the material used for its core. The sponge that covers the center of the buffer is much thicker and more resilient than that of a traditional hard nail file. This makes the buffer safer to use, and the pressure is cushioned, preventing damage to the nail structure.

Don’t be misled by the grit rating! Even if a nail file and a buffer have the same grit, keep in mind that the buffer will be gentler because the abrasive is applied to the sponge rather than to paper, as is the case with a nail file.

Keep in mind that a well-chosen shape for both the nail file and the buffer will minimize the time needed for the procedure and ensure a thorough finish on the edges, surface, and sides of the nails.
